We were staying at a hotel just up the road and I actually was planning on going to breakfast at a cafe right next door, but when we saw how popular Common Man was we took a peek at the menu and decided to check it out! There was a wait to get a table, but when we were ok with bar seating we were seated quickly. The menu was pricey compared to the street markets we had been eating at (most entrees $25-30) but they looked fun!

The husband got a tasty eggs Benedict with ox cheeks which was very flavorful, but the star was the Turkish breakfast I ordered; it came with hummus, pomegranate, pitas, and this amazing filo strip wrapped soft boiled egg! It was so crispy and the filo was lightly sweet and all the elements together were so good. The food was top notch! Only small complaint was that we both ordered ‘fast brew’ coffees and they must have not had any brewed because it took a good 20 minutes to get our coffees. But staff was all friendly and the restaurant itself had a fun bustling vibe.

At checkout they gave us a little packet of coupons for CNY; so we ended up going back a second time later on our trip! The second time I got the mushroom avocado toast- honestly it was a little too rich for me- it tasted almost like they used re-hydrated dried mushrooms and was a very intense flavor, but it was interesting and enjoyable. The husband got their version of a full English breakfast which was a ton of food! I tried to help him out a bit (I liked the hashbrown cake thing and the sausage) but seriously- a lot of food lol! I tried a fancy coffee this time, the Kaya toast latte and it was so good! It has a sweet flavored foam and little crispy bits on top and it was creamy and coconutty and not too sweet, I loved it! Also they were much faster with both drinks the 2nd time so that was nice.

Overall I’d definitely recommend it! It can definitely get busy during peak times but both times we went the wait wasn’t very long.

Common Man Coffee Roasters at Joo Chiat Road absolutely delivers. The Common Man Full Breakfast was done really well—two perfectly cooked eggs, crispy bacon with great bite, and sautéed mushrooms that were juicy and full of flavour. The baked beans were rich and comforting, the hash browns golden and crunchy on the outside while fluffy inside, and everything came together with thick slices of toasted sourdough, crisp on the edges and soft in the middle. A classic, hearty breakfast executed with care and quality ingredients.

Coffee-wise, the Cappuccino was smooth and well-textured with just the right balance between milk and espresso—clearly pulled by people who know their beans.

Service was friendly and relaxed, the space airy and welcoming, and the overall vibe made it easy to linger. A dependable brunch spot with great coffee and thoughtful drinks—definitely worth returning to. ☕✨

I live nearby and used to visit this place quite often because the atmosphere, food, and staff were generally pleasant. Unfortunately, my experience today completely changed my impression.
I invited my parents, who are visiting from overseas, to celebrate my birthday here. When we arrived, the staff told us that outside food was not allowed, so we couldn’t bring in a birthday cake. That was disappointing, especially since the only “cakes” they offered were basically sugar-coated bread — not something you would reasonably put a birthday candle on. It was quite embarrassing in front of my parents.
To make matters worse, our steak arrived medium-well and was extremely tough. We tried to return or exchange it, but because we had already eaten part of it, the request was rejected.
This led to a heated argument with the staff. In the end, when we received the bill, they informed us that they would not be charging us for the steak, and we eventually made amends.

      Conclusion:

If you’re planning to celebrate a birthday here, you might want to reconsider. Also, check your steak’s doneness carefully before eating. Unfortunately, after this experience, I won’t be returning.

This cafe serves a good selection of food and drinks. Really enjoy their fusion prawn laksa noodle. The service is very friendly and warm. The whole cafe offers a good and relaxing vibe. It makes me want to go back there again to spend a lazy weekend meal.

Foods considered pricey but can be shared if you have a small stomach. Foods and my cappuchino are quite good and staff are friendly and helpful. Weekends seems very crowded whenever i pass by so good to come earlier.
